Skin Changes with the Weather

Have you noticed that as the weather is changing so has your skin? Well, it's just the beginning of changes to come as Fall continues and Winter begins. The weather is turning colder, windier and drier and your skin is going to need some extra protection from the environment. So follow these skin care tips to avoid your hands, face, body and lips getting chapped, dry and "crusty".

1. Exfoliate: Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells thus allowing the skin to absorb more moisture. It also promotes the generation of fresh skin cells underneath, making the skin look fresh, smooth and healthier. With Winter comes along drier air and central heating which can make the skin less likely to retain water in the dermis level. Exfoliating is more important than ever.
*Choose a good exfoliate, such as Dermalogica, that is not too harsh but will
cleanse the skin properly.
*Also try an oxygen facial or microdermabrasion to breathe life back into your
dull, dry skin.

2. Moisturize: This is the most important winter skin care tip!!! You may need to choose a heavier moisturizer in winter just to help relieve dry skin. If your skin is still oily in the winter months, you still need to moisturize. Try to avoid alcohol or water based moisturizers, they aren't as effective and will end up drying you skin more. Choose moisturizers (and body lotions) that are cream based.

3. Take Care of your lips: We've all had or seen someone with dry, cracked lips. It's not so appealing and it doesn't feel so hot either. When choosing a lip balm that will help with this problem look for three things:
(1) Good moisturizing properties
(2) Provide a barrier and protects the lips against the elements
(3) Contains vitamin E for good elasticity
There are also products that exfoliate the lips, which can help to get the dead skin cells off for good. That way when you apply a lip balm it is actually healing the lips not just coating the dead skin cells.

4. Drink lots of Water: This is something our moms have told us since childhood, but its so true. It will keep you hydrated (which promotes more moist, supple, healthy skin) and it will help to flush the harmful toxins out of your body. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. The more, the better!

5. Last but not least.....Get Plenty of Sleep: So much happens while you sleep. Your oxygen levels in your body drop, thus allowing your body to rejuvenate itself. Also while you sleep your skin cells renew and repair thus causing it to be newer, healthier skin. If you do not give your body the proper time to do this you will see pre-mature aging, drier skin and a huge toll on your body. Try to get a minimum of seven hours a night, but as with water....more is better!!!

It's so important to care for your skin, especially as we start to age. Always choose good quality skin care as it is worth the investment. Also, treat yourself to professional services that will help to heal and protect your skin. At Beth and Company we have an incredible esthetician that can help you beat the winter skin blues!

Fight Like A Diva

Have you noticed there is pink, pink and more pink everywhere you look? Well it's all for a good cause. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and as you learn more about this disease you will learn there is something YOU can do to help wipe it out forever!

With 1 in every 8 women having invasive breast cancer during their life, everyone knows someone or has experienced the devastating effects that Breast Cancer can have on a person and a family. In 2010 there will be around 207,090 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (yep, I said in 2010 alone!!!).

With breast cancer being one of the top two cancers in the US and the 2nd leading cause of death in women, its time to take action now to protect yourself and the ones you love. Here are some good tips from the Susan G. Komen foundation:

1. Know your risk

* Talk to your family to learn about your family health history
* Talk to your provider about your personal risk of breast cancer

2. Get screened

* Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at a
higher risk
* Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
* Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at 20, and every
year starting at 40

3. Know what is normal for you

See your health care provider right away if you notice any of these breast
changes:
* Lump, hard knot or thickening
* Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
* Change in the size or shape of the breast
* Dimpling or puckering of the skin
* Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
* Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
* Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
* New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away

4. Make healthy lifestyle choices

* Maintain a healthy weight
* Add exercise into your routine
* Limit alcohol intake

With early detection and better treatments the mortality rates for breast cancer are going down, but one life lost is too many. So we continue to fight for a cure. Join us at Beth and Company as we donate to the cure. Donate $5 and receive a free Paul Mitchell 413 styling brush!

At Beth and Company we are determined to see the number of survivors rise and the number of new diagnosis fall. We honor those two and a half million breast cancer survivors and pledge to help fight like divas for the cure!

Hot Trends for Cooler Weather

As the seasons change, so do the trends for hair and make up. We all appreciate a little advice on what's hot....so here are some of the top trends from beauty professionals.

1. Eyes: *The smokey eye: smoldering eyes and sleek hair are a trend that can
take you from daytime to an evening out. With so many great products
out there now there is an EASY way to create that Sultry look!
*Pink Eye Shadow: create a fresh, young look without looking childish,
a great trend for any age. For darker skin types try a fushia and for
lighter skin types try a baby pink.

2. The perfect updo. "Undone" looks are in. Create a messy look that is put together. Make it simple for daytime looks and add a few more bobby pins or curls for the perfect evening look. Ooze femininity with an undone French twist!

3. Lips: *Bright lips are not just a summer look, create a look for Fall with
bright shades of pink and red. It has a little attitude while being
sexy at the same time.
*Wine Shades: don't think bright lips work for you? Try a wine stained
look. It helps to infuse fantasy into any look.

4. Metallic Nails: If you've never tried the "metal" look, now is the time to
step outside the box. Shimmering polishes, silvers and grays are hot, hot, hot!!!

5. Beachy Hair: Take the hot look of "beach" hair from Summer to Fall. Messy, windswept looks are hot for the cool weather. This hair pairs well with the smudged, smokey eye to make the look unique for the season.

6. Luxe Lashes: BIG LASHES are all the rage for Fall. False lashes have evolved from what your mom used, so don't be afraid to try them. You can buy easy to apply lashes (that you can take on and off multiple times)at Beth & Co. We'll even show you how to use them!

7. Defined Eyebrows: Strong arches, deep colors and fuller brows are in style. You can have your arches shaped by a professional, he/she will be able to make the arch perfect for your face. Also, have your brows tinted or use a brow pencil or powder to create that "strong, powerful woman" look. (Tip: use one shade lighter than your hair color on your brows)

8. Mega volume (BIG) hair: Create that big, teased look that will turn heads. Don't be afraid of a little (or a lot) of volume in your hair!

9. Bangs: Oh yes, bangs are back! And they add a mysterious, sexy vibe to your look.
*For flatter/oval face shapes go for blunt cut bangs, don't be afraid of
how strong this look is....you can rock it!
*For round and square faces go for the fringe look that's longer on the
sides and slightly shorter in the middle.

10. Big, Fat Curls are hot for Fall! Create this look instead of tighter curls and you are sure to be happy with the result. Channel the 70's!!
