Have you noticed there is pink, pink and more pink everywhere you look? Well it's all for a good cause. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and as you learn more about this disease you will learn there is something YOU can do to help wipe it out forever!
With 1 in every 8 women having invasive breast cancer during their life, everyone knows someone or has experienced the devastating effects that Breast Cancer can have on a person and a family. In 2010 there will be around 207,090 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (yep, I said in 2010 alone!!!).
With breast cancer being one of the top two cancers in the US and the 2nd leading cause of death in women, its time to take action now to protect yourself and the ones you love. Here are some good tips from the Susan G. Komen foundation:
1. Know your risk
* Talk to your family to learn about your family health history
* Talk to your provider about your personal risk of breast cancer
2. Get screened
* Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at a
higher risk
* Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
* Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at 20, and every
year starting at 40
3. Know what is normal for you
See your health care provider right away if you notice any of these breast
changes:
* Lump, hard knot or thickening
* Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening
* Change in the size or shape of the breast
* Dimpling or puckering of the skin
* Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
* Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
* Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
* New pain in one spot that doesn’t go away
4. Make healthy lifestyle choices
* Maintain a healthy weight
* Add exercise into your routine
* Limit alcohol intake
With early detection and better treatments the mortality rates for breast cancer are going down, but one life lost is too many. So we continue to fight for a cure. Join us at Beth and Company as we donate to the cure. Donate $5 and receive a free Paul Mitchell 413 styling brush!
At Beth and Company we are determined to see the number of survivors rise and the number of new diagnosis fall. We honor those two and a half million breast cancer survivors and pledge to help fight like divas for the cure!
